It is signed below in the bottom right corner on the mount.
The mount and frame are old and worn and this linocut needs a new frame and mount to give it the attention it deserves.
Alexander Podlashuc was born in 1930 in Pretoria and died in 2009.
Studied in 1946 at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, Cape Town, under Melvyn Simmers and Edward Roworth. Also at the Continental School of Art, Cape Town, under Maurice van Essche, Also in London at the Central School of Art from 1948-1952 under Keith Vaughan, Victor Pasmore, Gertrude Hermes, Mervyn Peake, William Roberts, and Paul Hogarth.
1952: Obtained a Diploma in Graphic Art the Central School of Art in London.
In 1972 he was awarded a Higher Diploma in Art and in 1982 a Masters Diploma in Technology.
He was a lecturer at numerous South African institutions and produced a wide range of newspaper and magazine illustrations including comic strips, in the UK, Netherlands, and SA.
In 1973 he spent six months in the Greek islands and this scene may date from that period. The old lady is dressed in black and perhaps she is pleased that the undertaker is nailing down the coffin of her husband, out of happiness for his long life or maybe out of relief!
He held regular solo and joint exhibitions with his wife Marianne and is represented in numerous art galleries and museums in South Africa including the Hester Rupert Art Museum.
