A history of Newlands House in Cape Town by the city's first woman mayor, Joyce Newton Thompson. "History of South Africa.hardly junior to the historic settlement at the Cape itself are the famous Nieuwelande founded by Willem Adriaan van de Stel and the manor house of Newlands built in 1751 by the Dutch governor Ryk van Tulbagh.".
Newlands House, built by the Dutch Governor Ryk van Tulbagh, was occupied and visited by many leading figures (incl. Lord Charles Somerset, who died there) over three centuries. The late Joyce Newton Thompson (noted author of works such as the definitive biography of artist Gwelo Goodman, and the first female Mayor of Cape Town) was herself chatelaine of this historic mansion.
