Botanical and biographical notes and explanations by Prof. A Bayer.
Katharine Saunders settled in Natal in 1854. Her husband was involved in the setting up of the Tongaat Sugar Plantation. Katharine was excited by the wealth of indigenous flora of Natal and produced a wonderful collection of paintings of the flowers of the area. She also despatched many specimens to friends with connections at Kew. The Kew bulletin of 1901 reports that Katharine Saunders contributed 426 specimens to the Kew museum between 1881 and 1889. One of the most string of her paintings is the Haemanthus Katharinae, ( Plate 17. Pages:1-343). The book has 106 full page colour plates of Katharine Saunders' flower paintings, other pencil drawings, family photographs and paintings of her house and surrounds. with a frontispiece photograph of Katharine Saunders. Dust jacket has  small tears but in good condition. Dark green rexine covered boards with gold lettering on spine and gold reproduction of Katharine Saunders' signature and flower on front.
