A superb porcelain Royal Worcester Spill Vase by James Hadley dated 1884 Ref.OR6 
A spill vase was usually kept on the mantel piece and was filled with rolled paper tapers or very thin wood sticks, called spill. Spill was used to transfer fire from the fireplace to candles, lamps, a pipe or a cigar. Commercial matches, which first surfaced in England during the 1820s, were a relatively expensive commodity until the late 19th century, and spill was therefore a more cost effective solution.
The Worcester factory always prided itself on its quality Porcelain. It received a Royal warrant in 1789, and at its height, the firm employed nearly 1,000 people.
In the 1850s James Hadley was apprenticed to Kerr and Binns of Worcester, proprieters of the Royal Worcester porcelain factory, where he worked in the modelling department. By 1870 he had become principal modeller there. In 1875 he left the company and set up his own modelling studio in Worcester High Street. Although no longer directly employed by Royal Worcester he sold almost his complete output of models for ornamental vases and figures to them. He is best known for his decorative figures, made in the 1870s and 1880s, when taste was shifting towards coloured models from the previous fashion for plain white Parian Ware.
This porcelain Spill vase, as shown, dates back to 1884 - the 'V' at the base of the Royal Worcester back stamp confirms this, but the design of the spill vase was registered a few years earlier, the Registration mark, also visible, shows the letter "E", depicting the year 1881.
The figurine is of a young girl, dressed in the traditional costume of the day, with her hands placed on a large basket.Superbly hand-painted with gilding to the rims of the basket and the girl's bonnet and dress, it remains in very good condition with the exception of a part-crack shown just under the bonnet at the back. It is very difficult to see this crack, which may have been a firing fault, but, whatever it was, it has had slight restoration work.I only found it after examining the figurine under a 10X hand lens.I cannot find any further restoration work, there are no chips, nor scratches. A very slight loss of gilding, as to be expected, is apparent.
