'Sad' irons, also called flat irons or smoothing irons, are shaped pieces of metal that are flat and polished on one side and have a handle attached to the other, created for the purpose of de-wrinkling fabric. “Sad” is an Old English word for “solid,” and the term “sad iron” is often used to distinguish the largest and heaviest of flat irons, usually 5 to 9 pounds.

This is a fine example of such and is a fascinating historical item.

It is a 19th Century piece.

Made of heavy cast iron, it is hinged so that the coals can be placed inside the central compartment, and fastens with a latch.

The handle is wooden so as to act as an insulator. It would at one time have been painted red.

It was made by the 'Reliance' company , and one can see the manufacturer 's name pressed into the metal on the side.

It does have a split in the metal down the right side as depicted.

Nevertheless it is in good condition for it's age despite some rust, which is predominantly on the inside of the chamber. The latch is functional.

A very attractive antique item , and very decorative, with a beautiful aged patina.
