Oriental Rugs and Carpets  Pleasuers and Treasures - Stanley Reed - Hard cover with dust cover in good, clean and tight condition.

This books traces the development of Oriental rug and carpet manufacture both historically - from the beginning of its continuous history in the thirteenth century up to the present day, and geographically - covering a wide area form China to Spain.

The author discusses in detail the particular qualities of rugs made in the towns and districts of Persia, Asia Minor, the Caucaus and Turkestan, with special emphasis on such celebrated rug-producing towns as Isfahan, Tabriz and Heriz. The famous carpets - the Ardebil, the Trinitarias, the "Garden Carpet" - are of course here, but we are also introduced to many beautiful varieties which are less well-known. A chapter is devoted to prayer rugs and includes discussion of methods of dating these rugs and of identifying their place of origin. Although the main part of the book covers the most important areas for Oriental rug production, we also learn of its development in the marginal areas of China, India, Pakistan, Kashmir, Egypt, the Balkan Countries and Spain. The author, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, is the General Manager of Perez, one of the best known carpet dealers in London, and many of the magnificent pieces illustrated have passed through his hands. He has an expert knowledge of methods of carpet manufacture and has been able to conclude his survey with a brief look at the mechanical aids and materials used today.

24pp of colour, about B/W 100 illustrations
