Cyanella alba Seeds

Family: Tecophilaeaceae

Cyanella is a cormous genus belonging to the Tecophilaeaceae family. They are indigenous to Southern Africa. Of the seven species, five are endemic to the Five of the seven species are found in the Cape Floral Region.

Cyanella plants have deep-seated corms and they usually bear a branched inflorescence. The leaves, arranged in a basal rosette, are deciduous. The flowers are orchid-like in appearance and range from blue, mauve, brown, orange, yellow, pink and white.

Cyanella species are mostly characteristic of the more arid parts of the winter rainfall region and are pollinated by bees.

Cyanella alba has numerous grass-like leaves, up to 15 cm long, arranged in a basal tuft.

To the best of my knowledge it is the only Cyanella species that has a simple, unbranched inflorescence.

The waxy textured white to yellow, or pinkish tinted flowers are held on 25 cm stalks.

It grows naturally in the Clanwillian, Calvinia and Ceres regions.

They should be planted in deep pots, in a coarse well drained medium and will flower from August to October if grown in full sun.
