Antique oil Student lamp circa 1880-1900 Ref. MA/11

The definition of a ‘Student Lamp’ is ‘a desk reading lamp with a tubular shaft, one or two arms for a light and originally having an oil reservoir’. The first Student Lamps are said to have been made in 1852. The lamp offered above has little to identify which company made it, apart from the name “apex” being found on the adjustment screw, and, from my research, is likely to have been made somewhere between 1880-1900. I cannot find any information on ‘Apex’ lamps, possibly this was the factory name which made the screw. The lamp would have had a circular wick, and, to adjust the height, the knurled ring on the burned would be turned either clockwise or anticlockwise.  I have no idea whether the lamp would still work (although there appear to be no missing parts), but, do remember these lamps were designed for a heavy oil, not paraffin.  Whale oil appears to have been the most popular fuel used, although olive oil was also definitely used for some lamps. The original glass chimney is missing and has been replaced with one of a similar age, a superb hand-cut glass chimney with hand-painted floral designs finished off with a cranberry colour. The remains of some gilding is evident on the rim itself.

The brass lamp itself remains in relatively good condition, some dings to the base and a few smaller ones at the top of the oil reservoir.  Please note that one of the tines which holds the glass chimney is missing. All in all, this is a really beautiful piece, and, with a little work, could easily be converted to electricity.
The lamp, including the glass chimney , stands 56.5 cm high and has a diameter of 14cm.  The total weight of the lamp, including chimney is 2.5 kilo.

Please note, I am NOT a qualified archaeologist/antiquarian and the description I have given is based on research of the subject.
This is a genuine antique. The classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
