British Supremacy in South Africa 1899-1907

G.H.L. Le May

Published by Oxford University Press, London (1965)

"This book, based on unpublished documents, explains why the Anglo-Boer War was for so long the vital issue in South African politics. It begins with Sir Alfred Milner's attempt to secure British supremacy in South Africa by transforming the Transvaal Republic into a British Colony. It examines the agreement in which Milner's design was frustrated as a result of the British army's inability to win a decisive victory, and explains how the war created a new and, from a British point of view, more dangerous Afrikaner Nationalism. It suggests that the Union of South Africa as visualized was a means of reversing the verdict of the war.".

Shelfwear to cover and boards, with some bumping. Insect damage to covers, but internally good, with light age toning consistent with age.
