About  Molly de Villiers

Molly de Villiers was born just after the turn of the nineteenth century at Saxenberg, the wine farm owned by her father George de Villiers. She qualified as a teacher and developed her training in art all her life. She qualified in 1938 for admission to the Atelier Group  in Paris, run by the celebrated Denis-Georges des Vallieres and Maurice Denis. It was here that she met her fellow student Maude Sumner. Both being South African they formed a friendship and Maude painted this portrait of Molly to whom she gave it “with much affection.” They were both able to leave France at virtually the last minute before Paris was occupied. The dangerous journey made in convoy through the waters patrolled by German U-boats, was fortunately soon over. Molly became principal of a Junior school in Milnerton, Cape Town.

Prepared by Anne.Marie de Villiers Molteno to whom the portrait had been bequeathed.

About Maud Sumner:

Maud Frances Eyston Sumner (1902–1985) was born in 1902 in Johannesburg, South Africa. After completing her schooling at Roedean in Johannesburg she studied literature at Oxford University from 1922 to 1925. Sumner later studied painting at the Westminster School of Art. Attracted to the French art scene, Sumner moved to Paris in 1926, where she studied for four years at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. She was part of the art movement called the Ateliers d'Art Sacre, she loved the new style of painting taught by the masters George Desvallieres and his co-founder Maurice Denis, where everyday scenes were permeated with religious undertones.

Although she had been separated from the South African art world she invited by Walter Battiss to exhibit with the New Group in 1938.

She was awarded the Medal of Honour by the Suid-Afrikaanse Akedemie vir Wetenskap en Kuns in November 1971, accompanied by a sensationally successful "semi-retrospective" exhibition at the South African Association of Arts Gallery in Pretoria.
