Bijlia is a small genus, placed in the Aizoaceae family, of only two species of clump forming indigenous succulent mesemb plants restricted to a small area of the Little Karoo near the small town of Prince Albert in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Bijlia (pronounced Bay-lee- ah) is named after Mrs Deborah Susanna van der Bijl, a succulent collector near to Prince Albert. Previously known as Bijlia cana, Bijlia dilatata was previously thought to be the only species in the genus until Bijlia tugwelliae was recently included. They have pairs of fleshy, succulent leaves which are pale green to yellowish white in colour, and form small clumps. Large, showy yellow flowers appear in autumn (April to May in the southern hemisphere). They are winter growing and summer dormant. Plants should be watered well when they start to come out of dormancy, and need bright light to retain their compact structure. Seeds should be sown in autumn. |
