Johannes Oldert (1912-1984) was born in 1912 in Rotterdam in the Netherlands and came to South Africa in 1935. He was a painter of landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, figures and abstract pictures and preferred to work in oil.
He was commissioned to do a number of portrait busts in bronze, including those of the late King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1947 and Dr H F Verwoerd in 1960.
Studies: He studied one year at the Royal Academy in Rotterdam under Koos den Hartog. He also studied in London under Harold Brownword at Regent Street’s Polytechnic. In South Africa he studied at the Natal Technical College under Merlyn Evans and Nils Anderson. At the Witwatersrand Technical College he studied under Eric Byrd.
Painting measures 51 x 35cm and is oil on board. The Painting is in it's original frame which measures 69.5 x 54cm.
