I WILL BE AWAY OVERSEAS VISITING MY ELDERLY MUM FROM
1/3/17 TO 29/3/17 SO NO POSTING, COLLECTIONS ETC. CAN
OCCUR DURING THIS PERIOD. THANKS FOR UNDERSTANDING
As described and photographed. Main comment to make is that I
believe the carpet has fading which I find common with these
pieces. (I have one in my private collection) which further leads me
to believe it could be vintage. I am not 100 percent sure but think
the base could be silk. The embroidery type is wool. Regarded as
valuable pieces. They generally come in small or medium sizes. This
piece measures approximately length 226cm incl fringe width 113cm
Typical in Soumak is the geometric tribal motifs, birds etc. I am
very partial to these. Regarded as flat weave and resembling a
kilim, however stronger and thicker than them. It has a smooth front
and a shaggy erratic collection of loose end or strands on the reverse
I see birds, dogs, insects peacocks etc. The colours albeit faded
are typical of the Soumak (comes from Shemakja, capital of Azerbaijan)
Colours normally, pink, rust, blue, dark green, red, brown, ivory etc
Hand woven in embroidery style
The fringe is different on each end
Wow!
The field of the item moves in one direction the borders either or
Back to front of piece
Base ivory, think possibly silk
