Kyanites name is derived from the Greek word 'kuanos' or 'kyanos', which means 'deep blue', alluding to its typical blue color. However, in addition to blue, kyanite can also be colorless, white, gray, green, orange or yellow.
With kyanite, color is typically not consistent throughout. In fact, most stones exhibit areas of light to dark color zones, along with white streaks or blotches as seen below.
Kyanite's most distinctive trait is its strong anisotropic properties. To put it in Layman’s terms, if they cut the gem in one direction (eg with the grain) the MOH hardness is 4 - 4.5 and if they cut the gem in the other direction (eg against the grain) it’s MOH hardness is 6 - 7
Orange kyanite was recently discovered in Tanzania. Nepal is now widely regarded as one of the finest kyanite sources. Nepalese kyanite is said to rival the blue color of fine Ceylon and Madagascar sapphire.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE MIGHT BE VARIANCES IN COLOUR DUE TO DIFFERENT MONITORS OR VIEWING EQUIPMENT.
