Hardcover.

First edition, 2007.

Tafelberg.

454 pages.

Since the last illustrated history of South Africa was published, far-reaching changes have affected not only the country, but the writing of history itself. In the New History of South Africa, 31 of South Africa’s foremost share fresh insights and new approaches to the story of this country. Up-to-date international research is woven into a readable narrative history that makes the past come alive. Readable, yet authoritative, this is the story of South Africa, as it has not been told before.

About the authors (2007):

HERMANN GILIOMEE is Extraordinary Professor of History, University of Stellenbosch, and was a Fellow at Yale, Cambridge, and the Woodrow Wilson Centre for International Scholars. His 15 books include The Shaping of SA Society and The Afrikaners ndash; Biography of a People, which was also published in the USA and in the UK.

BERNARD MBENGA is Associate Professor of History at the North-West University. He studied at University of York and Unisa, and has delivered papers at international conferences in the US, the UK and Australia. He is co-editor and co-author (with Carolyn Hamilton and Robert Ross) of the Cambridge History of South Africa, Vol.1, c.200 AD to 1886 AD. He serves on the editorial boards of the South African Historical Journal, The Journal of African History and the online e-journal History Compass.
