Duchen & Kleinman - 3 Shilling
Size: 36.1mm
Thickness: 1.3mm
Scarce
Danhauser is in the Coal Area of Natal between Newcastle and Glencoe
Dan Duchen stores, established around 1914, became Duchen and Kleinman.
The DNC stands for Durban Navigation Collieries. It has been suggested that they were used at the mine stores.
Dan Duchen, Storekeeper : The 2 larger values of the set exist with a hole drilled through them and a number over-stamped on both sides.
These were used as identification discs for cattle on Mr. Duchens Farm. The tokens of Dan Duchen known, have 5Shilling, 3Shilling, 6d, & 3d in the set but no 2 Shilling and 1 Shilling. Many of these tokens have seen a lot of use and are very worn.
The Firm of Dan Duchen became Duchen & Kleinman who continued using the "DD" tokens, but also added their own tokens then as they became necessary. They also added a 2 Shilling and a 1 Shilling to the Set.
D & K sets have slightly bigger tokens than those for the same values in the D.D set.
These Coins Have Traces of Coal so were probably used in the Coal Mines.
