Cannabidiol (CBD) is a phytocannabinoid with therapeutic properties for numerous disorders exerted through molecular mechanisms that are yet to be completely identified. CBD acts in some experimental models as an anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, anti-oxidant, anti-emetic, anxiolytic and antipsychotic agent, and is therefore a potential medicine for the treatment of neuroinflammation, epilepsy, oxidative injury, vomiting and nausea, anxiety and schizophrenia, respectively. The neuroprotective potential of CBD, based on the combination of its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, is of particular interest and is presently under intense preclinical research in numerous neurodegenerative disorders. In fact, CBD combined with ¿(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol is already under clinical evaluation in patients with Huntington's disease to determine its potential as a disease-modifying therapy. The neuroprotective properties of CBD do not appear to be exerted by the activation of key targets within the endocannabinoid system for plant-derived cannabinoids like ¿(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol, i.e. CB(1) and CB(2) receptors, as CBD has negligible activity at these cannabinoid receptors, although certain activity at the CB(2) receptor has been documented in specific pathological conditions (i.e. damage of immature brain). Within the endocannabinoid system, CBD has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the inactivation of endocannabinoids (i.e. inhibition of FAAH enzyme), thereby enhancing the action of these endogenous molecules on cannabinoid receptors, which is also noted in certain pathological conditions. CBD acts not only through the endocannabinoid system, but also causes direct or indirect activation of metabotropic receptors for serotonin or adenosine, and can target nuclear receptors of the PPAR family and also ion channels.

How is our CBD oil produced?

Our oil is produced in a facility in the US and has specifically been produced to comply with South African regulations.  CBD is extracted from industrial hemp and then combined with organic grape seed oil.  The result of which provides us with a pure CBD oil which has a 0.0001% concentration of THC and is a food supplement.  It is also legal in South Africa as it complies with all of the regulatory requirements.

Is CBD extracted from Cannabis and Industrial hemp the same?

CBD is CBD no matter the strain it is extracted from.

Industrial Hemp and Cannabis used recreationally are technically the same plant. The difference is that industrial hemp typically has low levels of THC (under 0.3%) and higher levels of CBD.  Whereas regular cannabis has higher levels of THC (around 5%-8%) and low levels of CBD.

For recreational purposes, regular cannabis is favoured as a person would want the THC to get ¿high¿. This cannot be achieved through industrial hemp. More recent research undertaken at the University of Mississippi's Potency Monitoring Project found that average THC levels in cannabis samples between 1975 and 2007 steadily increased, for example THC levels in 1985 averaged 3.48% by 2006 this had increased to an average of 8.77%. the reason for this is that higher levels of THC produce a greater ¿high¿

The challenge we have when using regular cannabis therapeutically is that typically we have low levels of much needed CBD and high levels of THC. Also many people cannot tolerate the psychotropic effect of THC.

How to use CBD oil?

CBD oil can be used by those wanting to enjoy the benefits of CBD, legally, without the high caused by THC.  It is also used by those using THC containing oils as a way of increasing the levels of CBD in oils which are typically low in CBD.

There is at present no accurate guideline of dosages. Each person is unique and one would need to experiment to find what works. Typically we would suggest using a higher dose to start and working your way down. We have seen effective dosing as low as 2mg at a time for pain where some suggest using 25mg.  2mg has also been suggested for anxiety. Higher doses are suggested for cancer.
