‘Black Forest’ Barometer, Circa 1920’s Ref.#W-16
The Aneroid Barometer, as shown above, is from the Black Forest region of Bavaria, Germany. Still in very good condition, it has a ‘Made in Germany’ stamp to the back with an English worded dial covered by a convex glass. The barometer itself is set in a hand-carved wooden frame, with a raised round textured centre ring, surrounded by flowers and leaves. And, it still works! These aneroid barometers usually have a small screw at the back (like this one does) which will adjust the indicator hand by turning the screw slightly either left or right. Google your local weather report in your area to get the exact pressure and set your indicator hand to it. The aneroid barometer looks comparatively modern, but, it was invented in 1843, and, soon replaced the mercury instrument. This is the type of barometer used in aircraft as well as weather forecasts. Like a good watch, these aneroid barometers are exceptionally well-made and are very complex machines which need to be treated with care.
The barometer measures 11 cm in diameter whilst the frame measures roughly 32 cm in diameter. There appears to be no damage to the carving, and, it still works. A difficult object to accurately identify as to its age, but, I believe it was carved around the 1920’s period, definitely not post-war.
