The Fall of Kruger's Republic

J.S. Marais

Published by Oxford Clarendon Press (1962)

'This book tries to explain how the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand led to the Anglo-Boer war. The author starts with a discussion of the government of Kruger's Transvaal. He then proceeds to describe the problems posed by the opening up of the mines, not only for Kruger's government and people, but also for the governments and peoples of Britain and the rest of South Africa. The bulk of the work deals with the manner in which these problems were handled after Joseph Chamberlain became Colonial Secretary in 1895. The opening of the British archives (in 1949) to the end of the nineteenth century, as well as the publications of recent decades, have made possible another attempt to reach some definitive conclusions with regard to the coming of the war.'

Shelfwear to cover and boards, with some bumping. Spine is faded, but internally good, with light age toning consistent with age. Previous owner's name in pen.
