BRITISH REGIMENTAL PINCUSHION = BOER WAR South Africa 1901 – 1902.
The 20th Hussars cavalry regiment was sent to South Africa to take part in the closing stages of the Boer War. They took part in Kitchener's operations against the Boer "commandos" of Transvaal and the Orange Free State, participating in the fighting in the early months of 1902. The 20th was at Heilbron in the Orange Free State when peace was declared in May, 1902. Owing to its late arrival in the theatre of operations, its casualties were light, just eight other ranks lost.
MILITARY SENTIMENT
Pincushions made by British sailors and soldiers during the period between the Boer War and WWI to memorialize their regiments and show that they were thinking of the folks back home. In most cases, these were put together between battles from commercially available kits, while others were created from scratch using feed sacks, horsehair stuffing, pins, glass beads, felt and velvet, ribbon, cigar silks and cigarette cards. They were routinely sent back home to wives, sisters, mothers and sweethearts as keepsakes.
The 20th Hussar’s crest has inscribed “South Africa”, “1901 – 1902”, Royal Crown, “XHX”, “Vimiera Peninsula Suakin 1885”.
