This superb sterling silver tea tray is square with shaped corners and detailed edges (overall dimensions of approximately 300mm x 300mm), and is hallmarked for Sheffield 1937, with the maker’s mark “EV” for Edward Viner of Bath Street, Sheffield. The tray is inscribed with, “Presented to R.S.M. C. Estall M.C. by the officers 2nd BN The East Surrey Regiment on his departure 21st December 1937 to G.S.M. Hong Kong” around a crest, and surrounded by several inscribed signatures. Company Sergeant Major Charles Martin Estall was born in 1894. He was enlisted in Norfolk Regiment in 1914 and served with the 8th Battalion, the East Surrey Regiment, and was awarded Military Cross. He was transferred to Reserve in 1919, and joined the 1st Battalion, c.1919. This record is held by Surrey History Centre (ref ESR/25/ESTA/)
From the internet "CSM C.M. Estall, won the Military Cross during the 1914-18 War as a Warrant Officer. His medals and sword are held in the Museum at Clandon. Later in the thirties he was the Garrison Sergeant Major in Hong Kong.
The sterling silver tea tray measures 30cm c 30cm x 3cm high and weighs 0.860g. The silver tray is in wonderful condition with minor age and usage related wear and tear. Please view the pics carefully to confirm the condition of this amazing rare historical engraved silver tray. The last three pics are the official valuation certificate from the South African Antiques, Art and Design Association.
