This incredible and extremely rare antique sterling silver (Danish made) Bernhard Hertz "Skønvirke" ladies brooch is a truly rare find and is in superb condition for its age. Bernhard Hertz (1834 to 1909) as with many of the famous Scandinavian silver artists of that era such as Georg Jensen, SL Jacobsen and Evald Nielsen created their jewellery in the "Skønvirke" style. After his death in 1909, Bernhard Hertz' company continued to run unit it merged into Lund Copenhagen in 1985. In his life, he was commissioned to produce jewellery for the then King Of Denmark, Frederick VII. This incredible brooch measures 5.5cm wide x 4cm high and weighs 13.6g. The front of the brooch is engraved "Lenie 11-2-1967". Please view the pics carefully to fully appreciate super rare antique sterling silver brooch and to confirm the condition.

From the internet: "Skønvirke translates as "Beautiful Work." It is the name applied to Danish jewellery made in an Arts & Crafts style. This skønvirke movement in Denmark encompassed the years 1900 to 1925, roughly the period when Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau were popular in Europe. In harmony with the other European movements, skønvirke was a reaction to over industrialization and strove for a return to quality craft work. The skønvirke jewellers were in tune with the British movement in that they wanted their creations to be available to the masses. Unlike the British, the Danes sometimes employed machines in the production of their jewellery. The marriage of Princess Alexandra of Denmark to Prince Edward of Great Britain may have some connection to the influence that the British Arts & Crafts movement had in Denmark. Skønvirke jewellery was rendered in silver by hand and exhibits hammer marks. Gems used included chalcedony, turquoise, amber and others. Many jewellers working in this style were trained as sculptors and this influence is evident in jewellery worked in this style."
