The Spinal Brace
A spinal brace is an important part of the post-operative spinal treatment. To ensure the correct recovery following an operation or a fusion of the spinal vertebrae, a brace is fitted to keep movement of the spine at a minimum. The spinal brace will also assist the patient in reducing pain that has developed as part of the operation or treatment.
There are two ways of treating a spinal injury or operation post-treatment. For the less intrusive operations/trauma, a spinal corset is used. This flexible brace provides enough pressure to reduce movement and speed up recovery.
The second form of spinal brace is that of the rigid brace. The most common type of rigid spinal brace is the Thoracolumbar Sacral Orthosis (TLSO), which helps to reduce the majority of the spinal movement. This brace is often uncomfortable for the patient to wear, but because of the success in reducing the spinal movement it is encouraged that the patient wear the brace while standing and moving throughout the day.
What Is A TLSO Brace?
A rigid spinal brace that is designed to limit the motion of the spine in cases of fracture or in post-operative fusions. These braces are form-fitting plastic molds that restrict motion by as much as 50% and are custom designed and manufactured.
Limiting the motion of the spine enhances the healing process and minimizes the patient’s discomfort.
To treat mechanical thoracic kyphosis, scheuermann’s disease, stable traumatic fractures of the thoracic and/or lumbar vertebral bodies, severe disc degeneration of the thoracic and/or lumbar spine, facet joint syndrome of the thoracic spine
