Antique Sevres(?) Porcelain Portrait Plaque Princess Élisabeth Philippine Marie Hélène de France Ref.AR-11
On offer is this really exciting find – a porcelain plaque of Élisabeth Philippine Marie Hélène de France. ‘Madame Elizabeth’, (3rd May 1764 – 10th May 1794) as she was known as, was a French princess and the youngest sibling of King Louis XVI. During the French revolution, she remained beside the king and his family and was executed at Plate de la Revolution in Paris during the Terror.
Although the plaque is not marked, I am convinced it is by Sevres. This is a beautiful, hand-painted portrait miniature style rendition of Elizabeth ( her name, ‘Madame Elizabeth’ appears on the bottom of the plaque) with raised gold enamel and showing the typical Sevres blue and set in a bronze surround, that again set in a superb gilded frame.
Trying to identify who the portrait took me quite some time, but, interestingly, I found a similar plaque of her sister, Madame Lamballe, (see left) who was also executed. Please note how similar the two portraits are, even the size of the plaques is the same and also not marked but with the diagnostic Sevres blue and raised gilding.
Further investigation produced more paintings/etchings of the same portrait of Elizabeth. I have set them out below -
Evidently, all these portraits were copied from a single, larger painting, but, I have not been able to locate where the original is nor whom it was painted by. Take a look at the dress, the small posy of flowers and the hair style, all the same in each portrait.
The plaque remains in good condition although there is a chip to the bottom of it (not noticeable in the frame). There is no damage to the painting itself nor the gilding. The plaque itself measures approximately 14cm x 10.5cm whilst the gilded frame measures roughly 28cm x 35cm. This frame is encased in a further wood and glass outer frame measuring 33.5 cm x 39cm all set on a red material background.
Please Note, I am NOT a qualified archaeologist/antiquarian and the description I have given is based on research of the subject. This is a genuine antique. The classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
