  Spode-Copeland 'Pheasant' pattern No 2/5660 dated 1912 Ref. P-24

Although the plate, as shown above, has a backstamp which looks like the 1875-1890 period, look closer and you will see the word 'England' below which makes this a 1891 backstamp. But, look further, and you will notice a impressed number. They can look insignificant and be difficult to read but once you know what to look for then you can date a piece quite accurately. These take the form of a letter over two numbers, in the above case D over 12, which would give you a date of December 1912.The following gives the letter code for each month: J for January; F for February; M for March; A for April; Y for May; U for June; L for July; T for August; S for September; O for October; N for November and D for December.

The 'Pheasant' pattern was first introduced by Spode in about 1816. An early version of the pattern has pattern number 2240 and another version, dating from c1822, has pattern number 3438. It is a pattern based on Chinese porcelain designs of the period.
In 1905 an earthenware version of Pheasant was introduced with pattern number 2/5660. This was initially exclusive to Waring & Gillow, a London department store in Oxford Street. Later the exclusivity was removed and the pattern became more widely available.
As shown above, this plate dates to December 1912.It shows the backstamp for Spode-Copeland, the pattern number 2/5660,and, the letters just below would indicate the worker.

The plate remains in excellent condition displaying the two pheasants, the complete design being hand-coloured in very vibrant colours.
The plate shows no chips, cracks, restoration,  a very slight loss of paint to the tail, and measures 22.5 cm in diameter
