This unique Tuareg necklace is made up of three large carved Ebony wooden beads strung on tiny glass beads

The necklace is 55cm long

The hand carved Ebony beads have been inlaid with silver and copper wire

The Tuareg people are predominantly nomadic people of the Sahara desert, mostly in the Northern reaches of Mali near Timbuktu and Kidal. They live in small tribes with between 30 and 100 family members.

The Tuareg tribe are excellent craftsmen renowned for their indigo cloth, gold and silver jewellery and carved wooden masks, pendants and necklaces.

The Tuareg have inhabited the vast and timeless desert plains of the Sahara for centuries, herding their animals from pasture to pasture, and trading between the Mediterranean and black Africa.

Recent droughts and wars however have seen the Tuareg marginalised and struggling to maintain their traditional way of life. Because of this, their handmade jewellery has become even more collectable
