The Complete Set of Three 1937 South African Pattern 5 Shillings of Edward VIII.

These are fantasy coins engraved by the British sculptor Donald R. Golder (whose initials appears beneath the bust) and show what the coinage of Edward VIII might have looked like had he not abdicated in favour of marriage to the American divorcee Mrs Simpson.    It is part of the "Patina Collection" of similar sets for British Commonwealth countries and sold by Spink in its July 2001 Pattern Auction.  Each set has three coins in silver, golden-bronze and copper-bronze, all with the same design.
Beautifully proof struck with frosted-cameo designs.  Their diameter is 38 mm.  As struck with no wear but with some discolouration.  It was reported that 550 coins of each type were minted; so scarce.
Individual coins of this set are occasionally seen on BoB but they are seldom offered as a complete set.A must for collectors of the crowns of South Africa and the British Empire.
  • Silver Mass = 23.9 gm

  • Golden Bronze Mass = 19.1 gm

  • Copper-Bronze Mass = 20.0 gm
