To say that Lira is South Africa’s most successful and high-profile young female solo artist just a handful of albums into her career is no puffery. From her first tentative steps with the 2003 album, ALL MY LOVE to her 2006 record FEEL GOOD and 2008’s SOUL IN MIND, the girl from Daveyton township on Joburg’s East Rand (who wrote her first song when she was just 16) has pursued a career that has put her on top of her very considerable game.
Not that Lira herself would boast where she currently standings in the firmament of South African artists. Little matters to this woman who has been named a style icon, a role-model, a multiple award-winner and platinum artist than refining a sound that’s unmistakably hers –one that’s as accessible to the fans who have sustained her career so far as a new audience internationally.
More than that, Lira’s career has been marked, from the start, by a deeply felt, and brilliantly conveyed sense of integrity –both in the way she conducts her life and in the lyrics that have helped ensure Lira stands out in a crowded musical landscape. Clearly, creating music that stands as a beacon of inspiration, as well as providing pure entertainment to fans, is something else Lira treasures. That Lira was able to use her light-filled, power-packed voice, mesmerizing live performance and songwriting gift (the same one that spurred her to leave a potential accounting and auditing career for music) to captivate fans came most visible with the release of her Sony debut, FEEL GOOD.The title alone struck deep into the hearts of a diverse grouping of fans, who were looking for something positive and inspiring to provide the soundtrack to their lives. The album’s title track became an instant –an enduring radio hit –earning a plae as one of the most-played songs ever on South African radio. Lira’s follo-up, 2008’s SOUL IN MIND, was as potent, earning Lira Album of the Year and Best Female Artist awards at the 2009 South African Music Awards. The power of Lira’s growing list of live performances, both locally and abroard, meant that she made it two in a row when she was named Best Female Artist in 2010 for the live recording LIVE IN CONCERT – A CELEBRATION. In fact, the success of the latter DVD was proved when it became the fastest selling locally released live DVD in South Africa’s history-reaching double platinum status less than a year after its release.
News that Lira followed up this feat with the first-ever release of a live music concert on Blu-ray in South Africa came as no surprise to a fanbase used to this artist setting the benchmark for others to follow. The Blu-ray will be released internationally in January 2011- following a remastered second edition of the ‘Live in Concert- A Celebration’ CD that features over 20 minutes of previously unreleased concert material and bonus tracks. Among these is the tribute song to Nelson Mandela ‘Something Inside So Strong’ as performed by Lira and the Soweto Spiritual Singers at the Sony 3D stage at the Nelson Mandela Square on 4 July 2010 –an ecstatically received performance that added to Lira’s considerable FIFA 2010 World Cup presence (including a duet on Listen Up! The official FIFA 2010 World Cup album).Early 2011 sees the release of Lira’s fourth studio record – RETURN TO LOVE. It’s an album that again raises the bar for an artist who never ceases to push forward. And it’s likely to be Lira’s breakthrough record into a global market that is set to be as smitten by this genuinely warm, hugely gifted artist as her homegrown fans are.

Working throughout South Africa in 2010 we reached close to 30,000 children. For 23 years the Reach For A Dream Foundation, has brought hope, joy and healing to South African children. These children between the ages of 3 and 18 years have used their dreams to fight life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, kidney failure and blood disorders. We do not discriminate based on race, culture, financial status or any other factor. Each child living with a life-threatening illness is given a chance to dream. Reach For A Dream believes that no child should live without hope. Childhood can be the most magical phase of the human existence yet for children diagnosed as having a life-threatening illness, the magic of childhood may be lost in the emotional, physical and financial strain of dealing with their illness. Reach For A Dream tries to alleviate some of this strain (often affecting the whole family), by creating a different environment for the child – one that is not focused on her/ his illness. We would like our children to find their laughter again and therein find the strength to live beyond their illnesses.
