Pictures of dark blue sapphires are taken under the brightest of lights but in normal daylight and evening light you are almost bound to be disappointed in a dull dark gem.
It is estimated that over 90% of sapphires on the market are heated to improve colour and saturation.
Poorly cut/poor quality sapphires have windows (pale patches) or dull spots. Again, pictures can be taken that do not show these. So if you are looking for a quality sapphire - ask a question first rather than spend good money on a disappointing gem - and then have to fight for your money back.
