Rare and collectible piece of nautical history!
To record speed and distance travelled, logs like this one were mounted on the rear deck of a ship. The impellor was attached to the log by a long rope and dragged behind the ship.
As the impellor spun, it spun the bracket at the rear of the log and so displayed speed and distance, almost like the speedometer of a car.
The log is in good condition and includes the brass impellor thingy that attaches to the rear of the log.
I have not plugged it in to check if it works, as I have no idea what voltage it would need.
Since the log is mechanical, I'm assuming the electricity would only power a light, but not too sure about that.
Everything turns that looks like it should turn, nothing is seized up, but I have not opened the main body to look inside.
The dial seems to be enamel and is in good condition with no cracks or chips, lettering still bright and clear.
I unscrewed the dial cover to check that the needle and counter reset knobs are not seized and they seem fine .
The chrome plating on the dial cover ring is peeling, but apart from that and some wear on the hammertone finish of the body, there is no major cosmetic damage.
The cover glass is intact and in good condition.
