For the Huawei E220 we provide the antenna with a flat coupling adapter

This adapter is placed flat against the antenna as indicated on the link above.
Please note that you must install the antenna to correctly point at your cellular tower to get better reception.

It will be cumbersome and not so neat a solution as it will require him to stand next to the adapter connected to the antenna everytime he makes a call

Nothing sir that I can offer the active plug in booster that bring reception wirelessly is too expensive -around R3000 and even then does not guarantee you that it will bring all the frequency bands - it will probably just help with 900 and 1800MHz bands.
I am sorry I can't help without causing unnecessary trouble.Maybe you can try one of those patch boosters, which I have found to be useless.Try your luck they are cheap around R10
