In some ways it's a good thing with so many shows going on for way too long and losing the essence of why they were successful in the first place. At least we can look back on all 5 series of The Wire and say it was genuinely groundbreaking TV. The big question is... how do you fill the void left behind when you finish this series? Will anything rival this show? With all the existing problems still prominent on the streets of Baltimore we now look into an area of politics that surrounds us with the media being the focus. Which stories get printed, which stories don't get printed, and whether the story covers the full truth. Familiar characters are back as well as new ones to turn up the heat even further. Major Carcetti's priorities go towards the education system which means cuts in the Police Department and the investigation into Marlo Stansfield is forced to stop. The budget cuts also affect the Baltimore Sun where the number of reporters is decreasing and ultimately the quality of the journalism. Everyone has their agenda with reporters fabricating stories, police manipulating crime figures and the possibility that drug kingpin Marlo Stanfield turns legit. There are so many possibilities as we find the main characters faced with new decisions and challenges in life after The Wire. One of the greatest, if not the greatest, TV shows comes to an end in fine style. If you haven't discovered The Wire, and/or heard people talking about it, then this essential for your DVD collection. All five series are exceptional with the characters, the stories, the realism, and the lengths that people will go to just to survive making this one of the most critically acclaimed shows of all time.
