A:
Yes. This will work just fine in a car. Using 2 of these you can see the outside temperature on the first and the inside cabin temperature on another. It would read up to 70 deg celcius thus too low for the engine if you want to see the engine water or block temperature.

The thermometers do not have a background light as this would drain the battery within a few days. The batteries (included) are similar to what you find in key-chain laser pointers. They last several years of continuous use before replacement is necessary.

The sensor wire cannot be unplugged and thus not be extended normally with some sort of extension wire. Not recommended and doing it at your own risk you can hack it by cutting the wire and soldering in an extra lenght of wire yourself, preferably a microphone type wire that has a core and shield rather than twinflex/ripcord. The accuracy of the meter may be affected a little bit especially using very thin wires.
