A Pro-Boer Silver Medal from Austria Commemorating the 75th Birthday of Paul Kruger and Paying Tribute to the Boer Fighters for Justice and Freedom. By Anton Scharff and made in 1900 at the Austrian Mint in Vienna. Reference: Hern, Medallions of the Z.A.R. and the Anglo-Boer War No. 260. C.V. = R1,750.
The medal was commissioned by Barron Bachhovon von Echt, an Austrian sympathetic with the Boer cause. The proceeds from the sale were to go towards the support of dependants of Boer soldiers killed or wounded in battle. Ironically, Kruger spent his birthday in Lourenço Marques waiting for the ship that would take him into exile.
