Plant propagation is a term used to describe the manipulation of natural plant processes and structures in order to produce living independant versions of the original/s.  It is an applied science and an art, drawing from many disciplines including chemistry, physiology, genetics etc.  It is also a skill, and given the right instruction, can be exercised and developed gradually from a basic level to that of an expert.  I also used the word art, because although methods are based on science, a degree of intuition and creativity is often required in selecting the correct method for the desired result.

It is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating hobbies one can have, and when you master the techniques, can be very rewarding.  It could even lead to a second income, or a new career, as there is always room for specialist small scale growers producing good quality plants.

About the Course

The course framework is set out over a 52 week (12 month) period.  Course notes are distributed by e-mail, on a weekly basis.  Each weekly module covers a new set of theory as well as new propagation techniques.  All techniques are illustrated with step by step instructions, photographs and practical tips.  A list of plants are given in each case that can be grown using the techniques described.  This means that by the end of the course, you will be able to propagate and grow to perfection, thousands of species and cultivars of annuals, bulbs, perennials, shrubs, trees etc.

The Course is structured in such a way that even someone with a very basic knowledge of plant morphology and biology will quickly progress to full understanding of all the theory.  There are no tests or exams, and it is completely up to the individual to progress at their own pace.

It is above all, a richly rewarding experience for any gardener, and one that will certainly bring you endless joy for the rest of your life.  In most cases, the commercial propagation and production methods described can easily be adapted by gardeners with limited facilities and budget, and i have tried in each module to come up with practical ways in which to do so.

Rough Outline of Curriculum

Subjects covered include the following:  Plant Structures and General Theory, Seed Biology, Sexual Propagative Techniques and overcoming seed dormancy, Asexual Propagation including root cuttings, leaf cuttings, various types of stem cutting, wounding, mounding layering, as well as many other forms of Advanced Propagation such as budding, grafting, and an introduction to tissue culture.  Also included in the course are Specialized Propagation Methods for bulbs, corms, rhizomes, tubers as well as for ferns from spores.  Fertilization, Pest Control, Growth Media etc. are discussed in detail as well as how to rear your young plants, and market them if so desired.

Throughout the course, i will be available to assist in understanding the theory, and to give extra guidance and advice.  I encourage students to put the theory into practice and suggest optional practical assignments each week, to cement the various concepts into reality.  Feedback from these assignments is encouraged and i am always there for support.  Communication and support is enhanced by membership of an online forum i have set up for all who enroll.  This allows members to discuss any plant or propagation topic they wish to in a friendly, supportive atmosphere.

PS.  EXCELLENT GIFT IDEA FOR ANYONE YOU KNOW WHO LOVES PLANTS!

Question & Answer

Q
Hi, I just wanted to know how come this auction closed early? I have been watching it and thought it was closing on 31 March but see it's already closed. Many thanks Pieter - Asked by Pieter S (216 )

A
Thanks for your question Pieter!... I have taken all my items off temporarily because my computer crashed, and i needed to take it in for repairs. I was told that it could take a few days to fix, and i was afraid that i would not be able to respond to sales/winning bidders quickly enough. Anyway, it turned out to be a minor glitch, and i will begin listing again. I apologize if you were hoping to place a bid, but the good news is that i plan to re-list the course, this time as a buy now item at R250. I think i need to build up my ratings on this item in order to raise it's profile, and have decided to sell it for the next month or so at that price. I should have it listed again tonight by 8:30pm. Sincerely, Jonathan
