Francois Badenhorst was born in 1934 in Pietersburg, in what was then known as the Northern Transvaal.

Later in 1954, following the completion of school, Francois went on to study at the Goitto Academy of Arts, in Johannesburg, under Sidney Goldblatt.

Over the years, Francois has developed his artistic abilities and honed his technique to varying degrees of perfection. He is well versed in artworks of landscapes, seascapes, still lifes as well as portraits. He mainly works in oils, acrylics and watercolour.

He has participated in several group exhibitions form 1973 in South Africa and some in Gaborone, and Botswana. In 1974 he had his first solo exhibition at the Carlton Centre, Johannesburg of which it was the first of twenty five solo exhibitions.
