Damascus steel blades are created by forge welding multiple layers of various steels, folded and re-welded many times to create multiple layers and patterns. When acid is applied to the blade, it attacks the layers of hard and soft steels differently, highlighting the attractive layered patterns in the steel. The combination of layered hard and soft steels creates blade flexibility, hardness and durability and produces invisible serrations on the cutting edge that aid in cutting.
The blade of this custom knife has been hand forged from 1095 and 15N20 high carbon steels and the cutting edge heat treated to attain a hardness of 58-60 on the Rockwell scale. A beautiful raindrop pattern is the result of many hours of forging, twisting and re-layering, resulting in over 400 true layers. The handle is constructed from real buffalo horn and camel bone, offset by brass and red fiber spacers, with the Damascus steel bolster and pommel providing both strength and protection. Accurate file work is visible on the spine of the blade as well as on the Damascus bolster. The cutting edge of the blade has been sharpened to an almost razor edge.
