A most unusual plant introduced from parts of Malaysia, India, and East Asia, the Bat Plant will make you look twice. Evergreen foliage. The main attraction of the plant is the strange, unique, purple-black flowers. The flowers superficially resemble a bat in flight with long whiskers.
I have grown these rhizomes in both pots and open ground the past year in KZN. The plants did very well in dappled shade.
If you don't live in a frost free area, you must do them in pots. I previously tried young rhizomes in Gauteng- they did not work as my growing season was too short for the plant to establish in time for winter, but if you look at the roots on these plants, you'll see they should settle faster than a dry rhizome.
