Pretoria 125 By Hannes Meiring (Cape Town, Human & Rousseau, 1980)., 1980. Small square quarto; pictorial dustwrapper in poor condition (see pictures), shelfwear and chips to hardcover; pp. 131 (including index); numerous line drawings of old Pretoria buildings. Parallel English/Afrikaans text. Some staining and foxing. "In the course of its 125 years Pretoria has grown old gracefully, a dignified city that fulfils its function as administrative capital of the country with aplomb. Much of its beauty lies in its situation - a valley between rolling hills - and in its broad streets and jacarandas and in its buildings. It was these buildings, and especially the historical old landmarks of the city, that in the first place interested the architect Hannes Meiring when he took his sketch book and went for a walk through Pretoria. But while he was sketching the buildings, something of the past that had lingered on in the buildings came to life, and the people who had once worked and lived there became real again and accompanied him on his stroll through the old city."
