'Foreword

During World War II the South African Defence Force appointed eight well-known South African artists, some of whom were already serving in the Defence Force in other capacities, to produce a pictorial record of the war or, to be more concise, a record of the role of South African troops both at home and at the various fronts on which South Africans, in a variety of roles and in many different units and formations, served.

Not all the artists served at the same time. In addition civilian artists were asked to submit works for purchase to augment the official collection produced by the official artists.

Terence McCaw was appointed as one of the Official Artists in November 1943. By this time the war in North Africa had ended and most of his works therefore deal with the Italian Campaign. Several have been displayed, either continually or in rotation, during the past thirty-five years in the permanent exhibition of World War II Art at this Museum, but this is the firstoccasion on which the almost complete collection of McCaw's works have been exhibited as a seperate collection.

It is a most worthy collection, both artistically and historically, which the trustees and staff of the Museum hope will arouse the interest of, and give considerable pleasure to the many thousands of visitors who are expected to call at the museum during the months the works will be exhibited.
