Dionaea muscipula or Venus Fly Trap is the best-known carnivorous plant in the world. Fly Traps secrete a mild scent to attract insects. If the insect touches the hairs on the leaves the plant will close tightly around it and begin digesting it. These strange, yet attractive plants produce a reddish color inside the leaves when exposed to strong sunlight. Venus Fly Trap is native to the wet savannahs of North and South Carolina. Typical summer temperatures where they grow naturally are in the mid 30°C. Winter temperatures can be below freezing at times. Mature plants enjoy full sun outdoors. Seedlings make excellent terrarium plants. Easy to grow indoors if provided the right conditions. Venus Fly Trap seeds should be sown in a nutrient poor soil; you CANNOT use commercial potting soil. We therefore suggest that you sow the seeds into a 2:1 mixture of Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss and Horticultural Perlite. |
