South Africa has a very rich bulb heritage. More than half of todays cultivars and hybrids grown in gardens and parks all over the world have their origins in South Africa. With the founding of a re-supply point at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652 by the Dutch East India Company, gardens around the world were beautifully transformed with colourful blooms from species never before seen such as Zantedeschias, Gloriosa, Acacias, Babianas, Lachenalias, Agapanthus, Strelitzias, Gladioli – and far too many more to mention. One of the most significant offerings from South Africa to the world's gardens was the Zantedeschia or arum lily. Prized for their beauty, white Arum's were grown in Britain from 1731. It became an icon of purity, chastity and innocence making it a desired flower for wedding bouquets. With its long lasting blooms which make excellent cut flowers, Arums are highly sought after by both gardeners and florists alike.
