The 1931 PROOFSET of the Union of South Africa INCLUDING the 1931 TICKEY (NGC Graded Proof 63 to Proof 65)
The 1931 Proofset of the Union of South Africa is not the highest catalogued South African Proofset.
That honour belongs to the 1892 Paul Kruger (Z.A.R.) set that catalogues at R3.75 million with the Union set of 1926 in second place cataloguing at R2.5 million.
But arguably, the 1931 proofset is our countries most enigmatic set because it includes the 1931 Tickey.
This 3d coin sparked generations of South Africans to become coin collectors and even excited non-collectors by just mentioning or talking about this little silver coin.
But what non-collectors do not realize, is that the 1931 Tickey is NOT the rarest coin in the set – that honour belongs to the extremely scarce Half Penny. The reason for this is that our country’s name is depicted starting with a “S” and not a “Z” on this gem of a PF65 coin (Suid Afrika vs. Zuid Afrika)
The 1931 set is catalogued by Hern (South African Coins & Patterns 2014/15) at half a million rand and only 62 sets were issued.
This may be a once in a life time chance for many collectors and investors – both locally and internationally – to own the King of South African Proofsets – the beautiful and 100% complete, 1931 set.
