Sammy Marks - a Lithuanian Jew who came to Cape Town in 1868 to make a living as a peddler - became one of the South Africas' wealthiest mining magnates.
A close friend of Paul Kruger, in 1898 he was given permission to use the state mint for a day. He struck 215 golden tickeys - 3 penny pieces normally wrought of silver - as keepsakes for friends and familing, including President Kruger and members of the Volksraad.
Only a small fraction of this original mintage exists. This coin has been graded by the NGC, one of the worlds most respected Grading companies.
The MS63 grading denotes an uncirculated or mint state coin - these are some of the most valuable coins to have in any collection.
