Qgira-Ta-Jan, a Xhosa herbalist and family friend gave Nico his first art lessons on how to sculpt clay oxen and paint them with ash, fat and berry juices. Nico's talents were refined through studies at the Johannesburg College of Art, South Africa, where he later lectured for 6 years. His dedication as a full-time artist, thereafter, earned him invitations to exhibitions and one-man shows that culminated in his international acclaim. While traveling in the United States for a period of twelve months Nico won two prestigious awards.

Architects and interior designers have discovered the unique and powerful African character of his art. Not only is his style vogue but by indication from the designer - field, it is fast expanding.
