Ulmus Parvifolia - Chinese Elm / Lacebark Elm Tree - Bonsai - 5 Seeds
Elms¿are¿deciduous¿and¿semi-deciduous¿trees¿comprising the genus¿Ulmus¿in the plant family¿Ulmaceae. Dozens of elm species are found in the temperate and tropical-montane regions of¿North America¿and¿Eurasia, ranging southward into¿Indonesia.¿
Ulmus parvifolia, commonly known as the Chinese Elm or Lacebark Elm, is a species native to China, Japan, North Korea and Vietnam. A small to medium deciduous, semi-deciduous (rarely semi-evergreen) tree growing to 10¿18 m (30¿60 ft) tall with a slender trunk and crown. The leathery, lustrous green single-toothed leaves are small, 2¿5 cm long by 1¿3 cm broad. The apetalous wind-pollinated perfect flowers are produced in early autumn, small and inconspicuous. The trunk has a handsome, flaking bark of mottled greys with tans and reds, giving rise to its other common name, the Lacebark Elm, although scarring from major branch loss can lead to large canker-like wounds. The Chinese Elm is a tough landscape tree, hardy enough for use in harsh planting situations such as parking lots, in small planters along streets and in plazas or patios. Owing to its versatility and ability to tolerate a wide range of temperatures, light, and humidity conditions, Chinese Elm is a popular choice as a bonsai species. It is considered a good choice for beginners because of its high tolerance of pruning.
